About Econo Transmission

Our History

Econo Transmission, Inc. was established in 1980 by Wilbur Hales. With dedication & determination Wilbur built a transmission shop known in the Wilmington area for its integrity. In 1994 Wilbur retired from Econo Transmission, Inc. Darryl Keels who had worked by his side for seven years stepped in as owner, of Econo Transmission to continue that legacy. Since that time, Darryl has carried on, with the same integrity the company was originally founded & that so many residents continue to value in a repair facility.

Our Staff

Sir Winston of Wellington, better known as Rusty

Was always here to greet our customers since 1997. Rusty blessed us with 14 years & took his job very seriously. Rusty lived a very eventful exciting life but surrendered in the fall of 2011. We will always remember how truly an amazing creature he was. We so loved & miss him terribly.

K9 Tarek - EOW (end of watch )11/11/2018

In 2011 we were blessed with another truly amazing gift with the addition of K9 Tarek. He is a retired 3 time United States Police Canine Association national Champion.

Darryl Keels

As owner & operator of Econo Transmission Inc, performs many tasks. You might find him in the back of the shop rebuilding transmissions, out front diagnosing vehicles, or in the office explaining the complex inner workings of a transmission problem with a customer. He shares his knowledge with persons that are interested in knowing how their vehicles operate.

Tracey Keels

Tracey operates as the office manager & handles the behind the scenes business affairs. She has been in the automotive wholesale industry since 1986.

Calvin Strawter

Calvin has been in the transmission industry for over 20 years, specialist in our facility since 1995. Calvin removes and replaces transmissions, clutches, axles, hub assembles, & differentials. He was born in Tifton, Georgia and moved to Wilmington in 1988. Calvin and his wife Linda enjoy traveling and are very active in their church.

Brandon Bond/ Certified A Tech

Brandon enjoys riding his motorcycle and working on his hot rods in his spare time, also coaching and watching his two kids play softball and baseball.

Michael Pridgen/Service Advisor

Michael was born and raised in Wilmington NC. He has worked in the automotive business since 1976. Michael started out as an ASE Certified Auto Technician and has worked as a service manager, assistant manager and store manager. Michael joined Econ Transmission in July 2017.
